Configuring a machine when the monitor isn't detected correctly

Occasionally the monitor autodetection fails. This can be for a number of reasons; eg. the monitor doesn't support DDC probing, a laptop built-in display or the machine is connected to a KVM switch and the monitor isn't always set to this machine.

The solution is first to add an extra monitor definition. You will need to find the horizontal sync and vertical refresh rates from the documentation for the monitor.

!xfree.monitors                    mADD(sun17)
xfree.hsync_sun17               31-72
xfree.vrefresh_sun17            50-120

You now need to configure this to be the monitor you want to use for the main (default) display.

!xfree.monitor_main             mSET(sun17)

Tweaking the monitor refresh rate

Sometimes the auto-detected refresh rate is too high for a particular monitor to cope with. This can happen if the monitor is old or the manufacturer has over stated the monitor's capabilities.

The easiest solution for this is to perform the same trick as above; ie define a new monitor.

Turning down the video resolution

The default display resolution is 1280x960. Some people find this too high a resolution for 17" monitors.

You can reduce the resolution, eg to 1152x900, by setting the following resource :-
